Abstract

1321596 Ice detectors ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO Ltd 3 July 1970 [18 July 1969] 36255/69 Heading G1N Ice on an aircraft part is detected by its effect on impinging electromagnetic radiation in a wave-length range of 3, 000, 000Š units to 30 km., i.e. top of the infrared to top of the radio frequency ranges. In the various embodiments described a transmitter or receiver is provided at the surface of an aircraft part on which ice may form, Fig. 1 (not shown), a pair of spaced apart micro wave cavities are provided on the surface, Fig.2 (not shown), or the temperature at two points of the surface is detected, the radiation impinging on one point but not the other, Fig.3 (not shown). Alarms or de-icing controls may be provided.
