Abstract
1321236 Finishing fabrics COURTAULDS Ltd 19 Nov 1970 [20 Nov 1969] 56762/69 Heading D1S The erectness and uniformity of the pile of a pile fabric comprising thermoplastic pile yarns projecting from one face of a backing fabric is improved by supporting the fabric with the pile facing generally downwards, feeding a liquid at a temperature at or greater than the softening temperature of the thermoplastic pile yarns onto the non-pile face of the backing fabric and allowing the liquid to drain through the pile and subsequently cooling the pile yarns to a temperature below their softening temperature. The pile may be mechanically worked during the treatment with the liquid, e.g. by drawing it over a scraper bar or by beating or brushing either the pile face or the non-pile face. The treatment liquid may comprise a spent dye liquor which has previously been used to dye the pile fabric and is then fed to a distributor, e.g. a spray nozzle, sparge pipes or an over-flow weir. The cooling step may be performed by quenching with cold water. In an Example, a carpet having acrylic pile yarns is treated with a liquid at 95‹C-100‹C.
