Abstract

1320896 Telephone keyset systems POST OFFICE 30 June 1970 [2 July 1969] 33502/69 Heading H4K In communication with a data storage system the ten pushbuttons of a telephone keyset have their normal significance if used singly but have a different significance if used in combination with one or other of auxiliary pushbuttons. The signals produced by the pushbuttons may be characteristic frequencies or frequency combinations or may be D.C. signals. Operation of an auxiliary pushbutton once or a number of times before or after operation of one of the ten pushbuttons will determine the interpretation the computer puts upon the key signal such as to extend the significance of the keys to include letters of the alphabet or operational instructions such as of addition or multiplication. Operation of an auxiliary pushbutton may determine the interpretation to be put upon the ten key signals until further operation of an auxiliary button effects cancellation and reverts the keys to normal numerical significance. The computer is accessed over an exchange system and responds automatically to a call with a ready-to-proceed signal.
