Abstract

1320885 Testing pipelines BROWN & ROOT Inc 23 March 1972 [28 May 1971] 13665/72 Headings G1M and G1S During the offshore laying of a pipeline 7 from a ship 2, the laid pipe 7a is tested by means of a detector 19 moved through the pipe so that in the event of a fault the pipe may be retrieved by the ship and the fault rectified. The ship 2 carries a pipe tensioning unit 3 which pays out the pipe to the seabed over a guide boom 4 as joints 9 are welded to the end, and which may also be used to retrieve the pipe. A buckle detector 19, Fig.3, comprises a pair of end plates 21, 22 joined by struts 23 and having guide wheels 62 spring urged against the pipeline walls, Fig. 11 (not shown), the forward plate 21 acting as a go/no go gauge as the detector is moved relative to the pipeline by cable 20. To position the detector 19 in the portion 7a of the pipeline flat on the seabed, a compressed air line 26 is applied to the end of a pressure manifold 24, Figs.4 and 10 (not shown). The compressed air acts on pneumatic rams 36 which move locking members 34 to a position in which the pressure line is locked to the detector. The compressed air also acts on pneumatic rams 54 to move drive wheels 42 into contact with the pipeline walls, and on pneumatic motors 49 which drive the wheels 42 to advance the detector along the pipeline, Figs.6, 8 and 9 (not shown). When the detector reaches its desired position the pressure is vented from manifold 24, and the air line 26 pulled out of the pipeline. To move the detector through the pipeline, the cable 24 is either attached directly to the ship, or to an alignment device 10, Fig. 2c, used to align a new joint of pipe 9 with the end of the pipeline during welding, the detector then being moved automatically along as the laying proceeds. Instead of being a mechanical buckle detector as described above, detector 19 may detect cracks or faulty joints, and may operate by means of television, radiology, X-rays or sound waves.
