Abstract
1320551 Ultrasonic vehicle detector GENERAL SIGNAL CORP 25 Sept 1970 [20 Oct 1969] 45725/70 Heading H4D A transducer means has associated therewith guide means for guiding the acoustic energy propagated by the transducer means through an elongate slot, thereby producing a line source such that the radiation pattern thereof is broader transverse to the slot than along. A system for detecting vehicles on a roadway, Fig. 2, comprises a transmit-receive transducer unit 15, suspended above the roadway, having beam pattern of elliptical cross-section. Time base generator 10 produces sync. pulses for transmitter pulse timer 22, producing 5 ms. pulses and range gate generator 11, producing a range gate inhibiting response to the transmitted pulse and any reflections from the road surface. Receiver pulse timer 23 passes pulses inside the range gate of duration more than 3 ms. and memory 24 stores the pulse until the end of the range gate. Detector 35 detects received pulses in two successive transmission periods and sets detector memory 19 which provides an output for an indicator and a release timer 20. Timer 20 is reset by every received pulse such that if no pulses are received in a predetermined time memory 19 is cleared. A similar system is described using only single pulse detection, but incorporating pulse length, amplitude and frequency discrimination (Fig. 1, not shown). Transducer 15, Fig. 5 comprises a ferro-magnetic base 40 supporting a magnet 38 and ferromagnetic polepieces 41, 46 which produce a magnetic field in annular gap 42. Diaphragm 45 carries a coil 44 in said gap which coil is connected to terminals 47. A signal applied to terminals 47 vibrates the diaphragm 45 and viceversa. The sound waves so produced are guided by removable members 52 and removable wedge 51, Fig. 8. The top edges of members 52 define with the walls of casing 48 a rectangular slot, which lies above the ridge 49 of wedge 51. In a device not falling within the scope of the invention, wedge 51 is replaced by bullet shaped insert (70, Fig. 11, not shown) and a plate having a rectangular slot fitted over the casing. This arrangement also produces the desired directional characteristic.
