Abstract

132,033. Mote, S. C., and Crouch, A. P. Sept. 4, 1918. Field, marine, and opera glasses.-Binoculars having eye-guards are provided with means for preventing relative rotation of the guards during focussing by rotation of an eye-piece or during inter-ocular adjustment of the glasses. Similar means are provided for preventing rotation of graticules during adjustment of the glasses. In the form shown in Fig. 2, each eye-guard 1 is integral with an eye-cup 2 and is vulcanized to a metal ring 3 engaging with a flanged ring-nut 4 within which the threaded portion 5 of the eyepiece can rotate. The eye-guards are connected by a collapsible member 6, the ends of which are pivoted to the rings 3. The means shown in Fig. 6 for preventing rotation of a graticule comprise a sleeve 7 secured to one end of the collapsible member 6, and surrounding the eyepiece tube 8 which is free to rotate within it. The other end of the collapsible member 6 is secured to a sleeve 9 surrounding the eyepiece tube 10 which is slotted at 10<a> to clear a screw 11 securing the sleeve 9 to the frame 12 of the graticule 13. the slot being long enough to permit of the necessary rotation of the eyepiece tube during adjustment. The collapsible member may take the form of two links, pivoted together, the free ends of the links being pivoted to the rings 3, Fig. 2, or to the sleeves 7, 9, Fig. 6.
