Abstract

1320244 Laminates MITSUI PETROCHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 17 Dec 1970 [17 Dec 1969 26 Dec 1969] 59981/70 Heading B5N A method of bonding shaped articles comprises contacting a surface of a first shaped article consisting of an uncurved rubber composition which contains 5 to 100% by weight of an ethylene/propylene copolymer rubber containing an organic peroxide curing agent or an ethylene/ propylene/diene copolymer rubber containing an organic peroxide curing agent and up to 95% by weight of another rubber, the percentages by weight being expressed in tems of the combined weight of the copolymer rubber and said other rubber, with a surface of a second shaped article of either a polyolefin plastics or a sulphur cured ethylene/propylene/diene copolymer rubber, neither of which contains a peroxide curing agent, and heating the resulting assembly under pressure to a temperature which is above the softening point of the polyolefin plastics when the second article is of a polyolefin plastics or is above the curing temperature of the uncured rubber composition when the second article is of sulphur-cured ethylene/propylene/diene copolymer rubber. In a preferred embodiment, a molten polyolefin plastics is bonded to the exposed surface of the polyolefin plastics article. Specified dienes are butadiene, isoprene, 1:4- pentadiene, 2-methyl-1 : 4-pentadiene, 1 : 4- hexadiene, divinyl benzene, dicyclopentadiene, methylidenenorbonene and ethylidene norbonene. The other rubber component may be natural rubber, styrene-butadiene copolymer rubber, isobutylene-isoprene copolymer rubber or polybutadiene rubber. Specified polyolefines are low and high density polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylene/propylene copolymers, propylene/4-methyl-1-pentene copolymers and blends thereof. Specified organic peroxides are benzoyl, divinyl and di-t-butyl peroxide, 2,5- dimethylhexane-2,5-di(peroxy benzoate), 2,5- dimethyl-2,5(t-butyl peroxy)hexane-3, 1,1-di-tbutyl peroxy-3,3,5-trimethyl cyclohexane and 1,3-bis(t-butyl peroxy isopropyl)benzene. The articles may each contain conventional additives and are preferably in sheet form. The molten polyolefin may be applied by injection, extrusion, blow or compression moulding.
