Abstract

1357950 Thermoplastic resin laminates BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 6 Oct 1971 [7 Oct 1970] 46436/71 Heading B5N [Also in Division B2] A laminate of two or more different thermoplastics plies has at least one ply comprising a mixture composed of (a) a homopolymer or copolymer of a vinylaromatic monomer, (b) a homopolymer or copolymer of an olefin monomer, and (c) a block copolymer (A-B) in which A is a polyvinylaromatic polymer (molecular weight 10,000 to 150,000) and B is a polyolefin (molecular weight 10,000 to 200,000) having not more than 10% of its C-C bonds olefinically unsaturated and in which A : B is 10 : 90 to 70 : 30, in which mixture the ratio of (a) to (b) is 4 : 1 to 1 : 4 and (c) forms from 5 to 70% of the mixture. Component (a) of the mixture may be a homopolymer of styrene, a copolymer of styrene with other monomers such as α-methylstyrene or maleic anhydride, a graft copolymer of styrene or a mixture of the above polymers. The impact resistance of the component (a) may be improved by the addition of polybutadiene (2-12%). Component (b) may include polyethylene, polypropylene, copolymers of ethylene with propylene or other copolymers of ethylene and propylene. The block copolymer (c) may be formed from polystyrene and polybutadiene in which the latter has been fully hydrogenated. The ply formed from the mixture may be extrusion coated onto polyethylene to form a two-ply sheet which may be deep drawn to form packaging containers or may be used to bond sheets of polyolefins, copolymers of olefins with vinylacetate or acrylic acid or styrene polymers. The laminate may be prepared by applying to one ply a solution, dispersion or melt of another ply. A further ply may then be applied by casting or coating or by adding a prefabricated ply.
