Abstract

1320215 Metal flocking BRUNSWICK CORP 16 Sept 1970 [29 Sept 1969] 44138/70 Heading B2E [Also in Division D1] A fabric comprises a base which includes metal, and flocked fibres having at least outer surfaces of metal bonded to a surface of the base and extending from the surface, the flocked fibres each being metal fusion bonded at or adjacent one of their ends to metal in the base portion. The fibres may be metal fusion bonded to each other, or may be maintained in spaced relationship, or may be provided in tufts. The base material may comprise metal fibres, e.g. random laid web material, woven, knit, wet or dry, carded or air laid; fabric material or alternatively a collimated hole structure defined by a body having a plurality of spaced through passages. The flocked fibres preferably have a rough, non- machined, un-burnished surface formed, e.g. by multiple end drawing of matrix material with removal of the matrix material either prior to or subsequent to the flocking operation. The flocking may be accomplished by electrostatic deposition or by magnetic flocking. Sacrificial material may be associated with the fibres, such material being removed subsequent to the flocking operation. The fibres may be blended with non-metal fibres and may comprise an electrically non-conductive core having a conductive coating. To facilitate fusion bonding the fibres may be precoated with adhesive material, e.g. collodion, camphor and ether, conventional adhesive cements, settable plastics. The adhesive material may be removed, e.g. by burning off. When the fibres are secured to the base by an adhesive, the adhesive may be made electrostatically conductive, e.g. by being provided with metal, graphite particles such as a metal loaded epoxy resin. The fibres may be stainless steel, nickel, aluminium.
