Abstract

1319997 Filter in extrusion apparatus SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 14 Aug 1970 39411/70 Heading B1D [Also in Division B5] In apparatus wherein molten polymer is fed by a screw through an annular passage of a rotating die 12 for extrusion through radially directed passages at the outlet wherefrom it is cut into particles by knives rotating around the die 12 (see Division B4-5), the molten polymer passes from the extruder screw to the inlet 16 of the annular die passage inwardly through an annular filter screen 25, comprising uniform triangular rings aligned with their bases defining the external face of the screen and separated by spaces to provide a desired small clearance, and a plough 28 is provided which collects material accumulating on the screen surface and is located in the stationary extruder barrel wall downstream (in the direction of rotation of the die 12) of a valve housing 26, the conical closure 27 whereof is periodically opened manually, or by clock controlled mechanism, to purge the material collected from the screen.
