Abstract

1319897 Testing castings for-core removal TRW Inc 20 Aug 1971 39204/71 Heading G1S Parts such as a turbine blade 10 made by casting metals around cores of say siliceous material which is afterwards dissolved by acid and so on; are checked to see if any core material remains by first filling the core passages 13 with radiographically detectable powder 14 subjected to vibration compaction and then exposing the blade 10 to penetrating radiation 15 such as X or gamma rays. Behind the blade is a radiation sensitive film 16 which shows up residual core materials (17), Fig. 3 (not shown) as indications 18 on the film. Direct fluoroscopic examination or electronic image enhancement may also be employed if desired. When the powder attenuation co-efficient and the degree of packing of the powder in the passages provide radiation characteristics similar to that of the casting itself then the part appears to be solid except where residual core materials show up. Tables and formulae in the specification enable the mass attenuation co-efficients for various metals to be determined and the powder particle size and acceleration for compaction to be found.
