Abstract
1319575 Coating apparatus BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO Ltd 3 July 1970 [4 July 1969 29 May 1970] 33812/69 and 26067/70 Heading B2L Apparatus for preparing a shoe sole for bonding comprises a support 6, heating means 20, a roller 40 for applying a solvent based adhesive and means for causing relative movement between the sole and the heating means and roller whereby the sole is heated then coated and heated again after coating to remove solvent from the adhesive composition the second heating operation taking place after a delay. In operation the roller 40 dips into a trough 42 of liquid adhesive and is rotated in this position by gear wheels 50, 52 driven from a motor 63 by a chain 70. A doctor blade (not shown) removes excess coating medium from the roller. Initially the trough 13 lowered by a piston and cylinder 92 on parallel arms 88 so that the roller is clear of the trough a piston and cylinder 110, 112 moves the roller and heater, both of which are mounted on a carriage 18, towards the supported sole. Sprockets on the ends of the roller 40 engage in fixed chains which are raised into position and thus as the roller moves forward it is rotated. The heaters are switched on just before they pass over the sole. The sole is thus heated and coated. At the extreme end of the traverse the heaters are switched off. The sole support 6 is then lowered and the piston and cylinder 110, 112 actuated to return the roller to its rest position. During this return motion the fixed chains are lowered so that the roller does not rotate. After a fixed interval a piston and cylinder arrangement 147 is actuated to return the heater 20 to a position adjacent the roller 40 since it does not return with the roller 40. The sole on support 6 is then heated by this return movement to remove solvent from the applied adhesive. The coating trough is then raised to its normal position and the apparatus is ready to coat the next sole. The reflector on the heater arrangement is water cooled and a martz cover is provided below the heater elements and this in turn is air cooled by airflow through pipes 160. Adhesive is supplied through a pipe 102 and the level in the trough 42 is controlled by photocells, a supplementary control being provided by a piston and cylinder 206 to allow for a false reading on the photocells when the tank is lowered. In a modification (not shown) a transfer roller is provided in the trough which dips into adhesive in the trough and passes it to the coating roller when the coating roller is positioned above the trough. The wheel portion of the work support is adjustable to accommodate different thicknesses of heels.
