Abstract

1319549 Crash bags GENERAL MOTORS CORP 26 Nov 1970 [5 Dec 1969(2)] 56200/70 Heading B7B [Also in Division F4] A cylinder 60, containing compressed gas for inflation of a vehicle mounted crash restraint cushion, has a penetrable seal 102 and is mounted in a collar 62 and spring urged towards a hollow piercing pin 84, the vessel 60 and pin 84 being kept out of contact by a cylinder 80 of prestressed glass which is shattered by the impact of a pin 96, when a ball 24 moves off its seat 22, allowing a spring detent 54 to release a spring striker arm 48 which strikes the pin 96. The ball 24 is held on its seat by a threaded member 26 and moves off its seat only when the assembly is subjected to a predetermined change in velocity for a predetermined time, i.e. when the vehicle in which it is mounted is involved in a collision. When the seal 102 is pierced gas passes through the hollow pin 84 into a duct 86 leading to an inflatable cushion. In a second embodiment, Fig. 3, the ball 120 normally rests at the apex of a shallow conical member 118 and is acted upon by a spring 122 which has a detent 126 engaging the web 154 of a U-shaped spring 142. When the ball 120 moves the detent 126 releases the web 154 which then strikes the pin 188 shattering the prestressed glass cylinder 172, and the spring 168 urges the vessel 160 into contact with the hollow pin 176.
