Abstract

1319525 Valves for tractor-trailer compressed air brake systems WESTINGHOUSE BREMSEN- & APPARATEBAU GmbH 20 Aug 1970 [28 Aug 1969] 40140/70 Heading F2F A valve assembly incorporated in a threecircuit air brake system of a tractor-trailer combination has three inlet ports 1, 2, 3 connected to three independent pressure supplies and three outlet ports 4, 5, 6 connected to three independent brake actuating circuits for the front and rear wheels of the tractor and the wheels of the semi-trailer and the valve assembly is operable by means of a brake pedal which causes a stepped piston 24 to move down to first cut off communication of a pressure chamber 10 with atmosphere via a port 23, and then act on a valve element 12 to introduce pressure into the chamber 10 from an inlet duct 9 and open the first circuit; this pressure acts on the underside of the stepped piston 24 to move the piston 24 up and this pressure also passes via a control port 57 into a control chamber 34 where it acts on a control piston 35 which is depressed and acts via pistons 37, 38 integral of piston 35 on a valve 42 to close a vent passage 43 and open the second circuit; simultaneously air flows from control chamber 34 via a duct 58 into a control chamber 46 where it acts on a piston 44 which is depressed and acts via pistons 45, 54 to close a vent passage and open a valve 56 of the third circuit. As the piston 35 is moved down it shutters a port 60 of a duct 59 which leads to a control chamber 47 of the third brake circuit. If the brake circuits fail the valves 12, 42, 56 are operable mechanically by virtue of an interlink comprising a bolt 28, and push-rods 22, 53 between which are formed gaps acting as lost motion connections. A rubber element 32 is situated between the brake pedal and the piston 24.
