Abstract

1319116 I.C. engine J E CHAPPLE 17 April 1971 [6 Nov 1970 10 Nov 1970] 52859/70 and 53420/70 Heading F1B [Also in Division H2] An I.C. engine is modified to operate as a dynamo-electric machine by constructing it of non-magnetic materials, providing solenoid coils on the pistons and cylinder heads and selectively energizing the piston solenoids so that there is alternate attraction and repulsion between the pistons and cylinder heads, the engine being operable in the fuel-burning mode, in the dynamoelectric mode or in both modes simultaneously. The ends of the piston solenoid coils 2 are connected to brushes which bear on slip-rings mounted on the crank-pins so that the pole face of the solenoid directed towards the cylinder does not change in polarity as the crank-shaft rotates. The solenoids 1 in the cylinder heads are fed with current through relays which are energized by a rotating distributor arm driven from the crank-shaft, so that the polarity of the solenoids changes to alternatively attract and repel the pistons. During dynamo-electric operation the inlet and exhaust valves of the engine remain in the open position, the fuel supply is cut-off and the ignition circuit is disconnected. Speed is controlled by a currentlimiting variable resistor actuated by the engine throttle pedal. There are five batteries, one charged by the engine-driven alternator and the others each associated with a respective roadwheel and charged by an alternator driven from that road-wheel. An adapter for connecting the batteries to an external charging device, or for static running of the engine in the dynamoelectric mode, is provided. A power pick-up device is provided for use with a roadway having a power supply facility.
