Abstract
1319109 Treating aqueous medium Q P PENISTON and E L JOHNSON 14 July 1970 34126/70 Heading C1C [Also in Divisions C3 and C6] A method of removing an impurity from an aqueous medium comprises the use of an at least partially deacetylated chitin derivative (e.g. chitosan) as a precipitant or coagulant. The derivative may also be at least partially deaminated. The impurity may be tannin, a phenol or an alkaline earth metal (e.g. Mg, Ca, Ba, Sr) salt. The derivative may be used in combination with lime, alum, or ferric salt. The method may be used in softening hard water or treating tannin and polyphenol - containing leaves extracts, gravel washing water or clay suspensions to remove dissolved or suspended matter therefrom.
