Abstract
1318737 Escape shoots F BOOTH 16 Sept 1970 [11 June 1970] 44111/70 Heading B7J [Also in Division E1] A fire escape is in the form of a flight of stairs which can be descarded in a sitting position in the manner of a shoot, which is pivotally mounted on one balcony of a building so as to provide access to the balcony below, and having treads and risers formed by a continuous smooth flexible strip 38 woven around transverse members 20, the treads and risers both sloping downwardly and outwardly (away from the top of the flight) to allow a seated or an upright descent. The flight is preferably of aluminium and has a lower leg 26 which can be lowered by a card 30 or card 31 via latch 29 this also allowing the flight to be disengaged from catch 32 and to be pulled down. The stairs are normally concealed by a manhole 25, and are counterbalanced by a weight 35. A pivotablymounted handrail 55 may be provided in another embodiment, Fig. 5, the handrail being lockable in its position of use by a spring latch 61.
