Abstract

1318698 Replacing mineral nutrients in a cultivation medium ASTRA-WALLCO AB 19 April 1971 [12 Nov 1969] 55456/69 Addition to 1148986 Heading C1B Mineral nutrients are replaced in a cultivation medium in the form of an aqueous nutrient composition for feeding to growing plants, containing (apart from any oxygen) mainly the nutrient elements nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and sulphur, formed by dissolving in water a mixture of salts in which the proportions of the nutrient elements correspond substantially to those present in the plant at optimal growth, the proportion of nitrogen being 4-12À5 times that of phosphorus, 1À0-2À5 times that of potassium, 1À5-25 times that of calcium, 2À5-25 times that of magnesium and 3-15 times that of sulphur; the method employed comprises providing a starting solution containing besides the nutrient elements in optimal proportions as defined above, an ion in excess, and a nutrient solution containing the nutrient elements in optimal proportions as defined above, the addition of the starting solution being controlled by a conductivity meter, and the addition of the nutrient solution to the cultivation medium being controlled by a pH meter, the excess ion being one which is not taken up by the plant in an amount sufficient to inhibit its growth, and replacing the nutrient elements taken up for the cultivation medium by the growing plants by the addition of the nutrient solution to the cultivation medium, the addition being controlled by the pH meter only, whereby the conductivity of the cultivation medium is maintained at 20 to 6000 Á ohm<SP>-1</SP> cm.<SP>-1</SP> and its pH is maintained at 3 to 8. When nitrogen is added in the form of nitrate, pH is controlled by the addition of a cation such as sodium, potassium, calcium or magnesium, e.g. as KOH, NaOH, CaO, Ca(OH) 2 , CaCO 3 , MgO, Mg(OH) 2 , MgCO 3 , K 2 CO 3 or Na 2 CO 3 . When nitrogen is added in the form of ammonium, pH is controlled by anion such as sulphate, phosphate or chloride, e.g. as H 2 SO 4 , H 3 PO 4 or HCl.
