Abstract

1318517 Laminates SCOTT BADER CO Ltd 2 Dec 1970 [6 Nov 1969] 54457/69 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions C3 and D1] A laminate comprises polyethylene or cellophane (TM) backing sheets on each side of a glass fibre mat or fabric which is impregnated with an unsaturated polyester resin. The backing sheets may be stripped off to obtain an impregnated glass fibre mat or fabric which can be moulded. The polyethylene backed laminate may be produced by passing the assembly between rollers, and the cellophane backed laminate by allowing the assembly to lie on a heated surface. The impregnant, which is placed between two sheets of glass fibre mat or fabric, is (a) a solid unsaturated polyester resin which comprises an unsaturated polyester containing the residues of a glycol component at least 55 mole per cent of which comprises 1, 4-cyclohexane dimethanol and of an acid component of which at least 50 mole per cent comprises fumaric acid and 0 to 50 mole per cent comprises a saturated dicarboxylic acid, and 10 to 60% by wt. of at least one a, #-ethylenically unsaturated monomer; (b) a resin composition which comprises 10 to 60% by wt. of an a, #- ethylenically unsaturated monomer and a mixture of at least 50% by wt. of the unsaturated polyester of (a) and at least one other unsaturated polyester which is such as to form a liquid resin when mixed alone with the monomer in whatever proportion; or (c) a resin composition which comprises at least 50% by wt. of the solid unsaturated polyester resin (a) and a liquid unsaturated polyester resin. Examples of glycols, acids and monomer are given.
