Abstract

1318371 Reducing grainy appearance FUJI SHASHIN FILM KK 20 May 1970 [ 21 May 1969] 24512/70 Heading G2C [ Also in Divisions C4 and H1] The apparent graininess of a photographic or phosphor screen image is reduced by dividing the image into a plurality of sections in the form of a grid pattern, the spacing between the centres of the grid elements being smaller than the spacing between the clumps of particles forming the image. The grid pattern can be black or white. Fig. 4A shows part of a photographic image in which the silver particles are clumped together into a number of separate areas 7, producing a grainy effect. Fig. 5A shows the same image with the areas divided into a grid pattern according to the invention, the effect being to reduce the grainy appearance. The grid pattern may be imposed in various ways. It may be printed or laminated on the protecting layer of the photosensitive sheet, or formed as a latent image on the sheet, or optically projected thereon. The grid may be a line grid, as in Fig. 5A, or composed of contiguous circular elements, as in Fig. 12A, in which case the grid spacing is the distance between adjacent centres. As applied to the phosphor screen of a cathode ray tube, the grid structure may be applied in front of or behind the screen.
