Abstract
1318181 Sonar systems GERMANY DEFENCE MINISTER OF 20 May 1959 [20 May 1958] 17229/59 Heading H4D Corrections needed in finding the depth of an object by echo-sounding are found by sinking, at a known distance from the sounder, a body which sinks at a constant rate, and tracking its descent. The depth measured by tracking will generally differ from the depth calculated from the known rate of descent because of refraction of the sound waves used in tracking, and this enables the refraction to be measured. The object may be a rocket, carrying a panoramic ultransonic transmitter of the same frequency as the echo sounder or a retractable reflector, fired from the ship carrying the sounder.
