Abstract

1318109 Thermoelectric devices TOYOTA CHUO KENKYUSHO KK 12 Aug 1970 [28 Feb 1970] 38943/70 Heading H1K An instrument for measuring rates of gas flow is based on two thermocouples connected in series opposition, one junction being in close proximity to the midpoint of a constant currentfed heater wire and thermally (and electrically) connected thereto and the second junction being placed as close to the first junction as is possible without it being affected by the heater. In embodiments the supports a, b for the "Nichrome" (Trade Mark) heater wire I may be phosphor-bronze rods or hollow stainless steel tubes, the ends of the rods or tubes being bevelled so that the heater wire may be easily welded thereto. The wire element c of "Alumel" (Trade Mark) forms junctions with elements d and e of chromel. Elements d and e may both be of wire-form and may be taken directly or via supporting rods or tubes to a 4-pole plug constituted with the heater supports a, b, the four ends being mechanically joined by "Araldite" (Trade Mark) at the plug. The supports for the thermocouple elements d, e may be of phosphor-bronze but if they are of chromel the wire element d may be replaced by its support. Various constructions are shown which avoid the connection of c and e to two different points of the heater wire I by making the junction between the two elements at a small distance from the connection between one of them and the heater wire. The output of the unit may be fed to a meter through a linearizing amplifier. Alternative indicators are C.R.T.s or chart recorders. The unit may be used for measuring the air flow through radiators or for investigating the flow distribution in the outlets of car heaters or defrosters.
