Abstract

1317882 Testing steel BRITISH STEEL CORP 29 April 1970 [1 May 1969] 22373/69 Heading C7D [Also in Divisions G1 and H1] Apparatus for monitoring the temperature or for obtaining cooling characteristics of molten material comprises a head having at least one passageway 33 with an open end through which gas can be passed, the head being adapted to be dipped into molten material so that the open end of the passageway is below the surface of the molten material, and a device for monitoring through the passageway the condition of the molten material adjacent the said end, the device being movable from a retracted position in the passageway to an advanced position where it extends from the passageway when monitoring is to be effected. As shown, a sheathed thermocouple 17 or a sampling device Fig. 2 (not shown) is attached to a rod 18 which is reciprocable, by a pistoncylinder arrangement, within a tube 11 forming the passageway 33. Gas may be directed under pressure through an opening 13 towards the open end of the tube so that with the apparatus in use, the change of pressure or rate of flow of gas can be indicative of when the tube touches molten material on being lowered towards the surface of the molten material. Alternatively, parts of the apparatus may be chosen to be electrically conductive so that an electrical level sensing arrangement can be employed to sense the level of the molten material. The thermocouple 17 or sampling device is then inserted into the molten material to obtain the temperature or a sample thereof. In the case of a sample, a temperature indicator is subsequently employed to measure the temperature of the sample as it cools. The apparatus may be additionally provided with a tube 12 forming part of an optical arrangement comprising a lens 15, flexible light pipe 16 and a photo-electric cell so that the temperature of the molten material may be determined by pyrometric means. The apparatus may be modified by the provision of a thermocouple and at least one sampling device in a common head.
