C. engine is run in by causing an aliphatic chlorinated or brominated hydrocarbon e.g. carbon tetrachloride in the vapour state to enter an air intake of the engine while it is running. An absorbent pad is soaked with the additive in liquid form and located near the air intake. The pad may be a fibrous element of an air intake filter.
