Abstract

1316956 Radar EMI Ltd 9 Sept 1970 [11 Sept 1969] 44804/69 Heading H4D A hand held electronically scanned (frequency swept) pulsed radar Fig. 1(a) is described, the CRT sector PPI display 18 Fig. 2(b) being viewed through eyepiece 3 of the radar with the actual sector of terrain Fig. 2(a) being scanned, being viewed through eyepiece 2. The aerial housed in lateral extension 5 is etched on a stripline line sheet to give a stripline array 14" x 14". A Gunn effect diode is used as the transmitter and transmits pulses at 10 Kpps having their carrier frequency swept at 50 c/s to cause the aerial to transmit and receive in a 50 c/s scanning beam, sweeping out a Π30 degrees, 60 degrees wide sector. The persistance of the CRT is so short (20 ms. decay time) that the user can manually sweep the entire radar over the terrain without giving blurred (tailed) images. The radar can be swivel mounted on a tripod.
