Abstract
1316804 Winding webs EASTMAN KODAK CO 2 June 1970 [2 June 1969] 26560/70 Heading B8R Apparatus for winding a web or webs to a prescribed roll tightness comprises a plurality of slip clutches each having an output member of a larger radial dimension than the corresponding driven input members, the clutches being disposed on a shaft so that respective tandem combinations thereof may wind about their output members webs of corresponding widths; control means co-operaitve with the clutches for adjusting the coupling between the input and output members thereof; and means for producing a control signal or signals proportional to the radius of a roll or rolls being wound. With this arrangement the clutches co-operate in groups to provide wind-up torque commensurate with the widths of respective webs being wound. As shown, a wide web 10 is peeled from a supply roll 12 and is slit by cutters 14 into alternate narrow webs 18, 20, 22, 24, 26 which may be of any selected width and which are wound by respective drives 28, 30 each including a motor 32 or 38 driving a shaft 34 or 40 to which a plurality of electromagnetic clutches 36 or 42 are ganged. A control device 60, in response to a signal proportional to the radius of a roll being wound, increases the electrical power supplied as the torque requirements of a clutch increase, and a speed control device 62 operates to decrease the speed of the drive shaft gradually as the radius of the rewind roll increases. Thus a narrow rewind web such as 18 which is half as wide as another such as 20 is wound on, and by, half as many clutches as the wider rewind web, but since the rewind rolls in question similarly grow in radius, their respective clutch couplings are simultaneously similarly increased during rewinding. A computer arrangement for deriving the speed and slip-coupling control signals, and a suitable form of clutch are described with reference to Figs. 2 and 4 (not shown).
