Abstract

1316795 Cationic complexes of rhodium and iridium B P CHEMICALS Ltd 13 Oct 1971 [26 Oct 1970] 50729/70 Heading C2J Cationic complexes of general formula where A is a neutral diene, M is monovalent Rh or Ir, Z is a neutral uni- or bi-dentate ligand, X is a univalent anion, x is 1 or 2 and y is 0, 1 or 2, x and y being such that four co-ordination sites of M are occupied, are prepared by reacting [(diene) 2 M]+X- or [(diene)M(RCN) 2 ]+X-, where R is alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl with the appropriate ligand Z which is different from that present in the starting material. The reaction is normally effected in the liquid phase, especially in CH 2 CL 2 , under a nitrogen atmosphere. In the examples, the following compounds are prepared (a) [(CN 3 CH) 2 M(COD)]<SP>+</SP> BF 4 -; (b) [(COD)IrZ 1 or Z 2 ] BF 4 , where Z is (i) Ph 3 P, (ii) Ph 2 PCH 3 , (iii) 1,2-bis-(diphenylphosphine) ethane, (iv) (CH 3 ) 2 AsPh; (c) [2,2<SP>1</SP> - bipyridyl Ir COD] BF 4 and (d) [(COD) Rh(NBD)] BF 4 , where COD is cycloocta-1,5- diene and NBD is norbornadiene. Numerous other radicals Z are listed.
