Abstract

1316748 Crystallization apparatus IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 17 Sept 1970 [27 Oct 1969] 52440/69 Heading B1G In a process for separating a crystallizable compound from a melt or solution containing it the liquid is fed into an elongate purification chamber through an inlet and the spent liquor removed from an outlet remote from the inlet. Within the chamber the liquid runs along and between closely adjacent confronting surfaces, one of which is heated and the other cooled, the crystals which separate on the cooled surface being mechanically impelled towards an outlet remote from both the above-mentioned inlet and outlet. The crystals are moved by means of a rotary movement between the cooled surface and a displacement means preventing an oblique surface to the crystals. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, an inner cylinder 1 is cooled by liquid flowing through it, and outer cylinder 2 is heated by liquid flowing between it and a heating jacket. The liquid containing the crystallizable compound is fed in via inlet 12, the spent liquor being removed via outlet 14 and the purified crystals via outlet 13. The crystals are moved towards outlet 13 by means of the relative motion of cylinder 1 and helical fins 3 on cylinder 2; this motion being achieved by rotation of cylinder 1. In other embodiments the outer tube may be cooled, or the inner tube have fins, the inner tube may be conical or may be replaced by a flat rotatable disc.
