Abstract
1316194 Oximes TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 8 March 1971 6263/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] Normal paraffin oximes are obtained by (a) photochemically reacting in a light-transmittable vessel, at 32-110‹ F., a C 10-13 normal paraffin with a gaseous nitrosating agent whose partial pressure in the vessel is 125-625 mm. Hg., under the influence of light excluding wavelengths below 200 millimicrons; (b) separating unreacted normal paraffin from the reaction product by solvent extraction; and (c) neutralizing the separated reaction product with a base to form a two-phase system containing the oxime in one phase and neutralization products of the base in the other, and separating the phase containing the oxime Suitable nitrosating agents are nitrosyl halides, nitrosyl sulphuric acid, nitric oxide and chlorine, and nitrogen peroxide and chlorine; diluents such as hydrogen chloride and nitrogen may be used. The light for the reaction may be obtained by filtering through suitable glasses, solutions or plastics, or by the use of fluorescent materials. Preferably 85-98% H 2 SO 4 or H 3 PO 4 is allowed to flow at least intermittently over the reaction surface of the reaction vessel, to prevent formation of deposits which will inhibit the transmission of light. With nitrosyl halides as nitrosating agents the initial products are the oxime hydrohalides, which are neutralized to liberate the free oxime; or if, e.g. H 2 SO 4 is used the oxime hydrohalides form complexes with the acid. The oxime products are useful as engine oil additives, anti-icing agents, fuels, rocket propellants and pesticides.
