1315825 Spiropyran derivatives MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 2 Dec 1970 [10 Dec 1969] 60347/69 Heading C2C [Also in Division C4] Novel spiropyrans having a pyrazoline ring spiro to the pyran ring with the oxygen atom of the pyran ring adjacent the atom which forms the spiro attachment between the pyrazoline and pyran rings, and having one or more rings fused to the pyran ring, and particularly spiropurans, one form of which has the general formula in which R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP>, which may be the same as or different from one another, each represents an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl group, or R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> together complete a cycloalkyl ring, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP>, which may be the same as or different from one another, each represents an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl group, and R<SP>5</SP> and R<SP>6</SP>, which may be the same as or different from one another, each represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or a nitro, cyano or carboxy group, or R<SP>5</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> together form a fused on aromatic ring are prepared by reacting a quaternary ammonium compound such as one of formula with an aromatic aldehyde such as one of formula The products have photochromic and thermochromic properties undergoing a change of type 5 - Methylthio - 2,3,4,4 - tetramethyl -, 3- methylthio - 4,4,5 - trimethyl -, 2 - ethyl - 5 - ethylthio - 3,4,4 - trimethyl - and 5 - ethylthio - 2,3,4, 4-tetramethyl-pyrazolenium iodides are prepared by quaternization processes.
