131,568. Watkins, A. April 17, 1919. Scales.-The reading of the gauge is expressed as an octaval or decimal fraction, each figure of which is taken directly from a separate scale. In the form shown for reading in octavals, the sorewec spindle a has a pitch of 32 and the index line A is divided into eights of an inch. The thimble edge scale C is divided into sixteen parts numbered in two series of 0 to 8. The vernier scale B has eight lines parallel to the index line, and oblique lines g are drawn as shown from each. graduation on the line A to a point on the eighth line opposite the next graduation. To read a measurement, the first figure is taken from the line A, the second from the line B, the third from the scale C, and, if a fourth is required, it is given by the ordinary use of the horizontal lines of scales B as a vernier scale in conjunction with the scale C. The reading in the example shown is 520. The two series of figures on scale C are differentiated by one line j or a pair of parallel lines i at the side. The body of the gauge has reference tables on both sides, giving the octaval equivalents of fractions with denominator 16, 32, or 64.
