Abstract

1315563 Improvements in the oxo process FARBWERKE HOECHST AG and RUHRCHEMIE AG 23 July 1970 [24 July 1969] 35712/70 Heading C2C The invention relates to a process for the manufacture of an aldehyde and/or an alcohol by the hydroformylation of an olefin using carbon monoxide and hydrogen at elevated temperature and pressure, in the presence of a cobalt compound as catalyst, the catalyst being removed from the hydroformylation product by steam treatment preferably at 50‹ to 180‹ C. and at 5 to 30 atmospheres gauge pressure, wherein the sulphur content of a hydroformylation product does not exceed 10 milligrammes per kilogram of product. The starting products are freed from sulphur and/or sulphur containing compounds to an extent such that the hydroformylation product contains not more than 10 milligrams of sulphur per kilogram, e.g. by using a process which comprises scrubbing the reagents by a physico-chemical method and then adsorbing any remaining sulphur using a solid bed absorber.
