As shown, these transistors Q 1 , Q 2 , Q 3 operating in the groundedbase mode are connected in parallel between input and output, the bias voltages V 1 , V 2 , V 3 being arranged such that the transistors become non-conductive at these different levels of the input signal. If the input is a positive-going ramp, the gain may be arranged to vary such that for voltages in the two positive quadrants the output approximates a sine curve. The negative part of the signal may be shaped by inverting the output signal shown and passing it through a further amplifier of the type shown.
