Abstract

1315046 Selecting and indicating largest or smallest signals; amplifiers INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 16 Dec 1970 [29 Dec 1969 (2)] 59628/70 Heading H3T In a circuit for selecting the largest or smallest of a number of input signals V1-Vn in which an amplifier for each signal has negative feedback path F from a common output whereby all but the extreme signal is suppressed, means are provided to indicate digitally at J which amplifier carries the extreme signal. As shown in Fig. 7, an individual feedback diode T limits the effect of the overall feedback to each input. In Figs. 6 and 8 (not shown) the indication is provided by a respective long tail pair which detects the voltage across a diode 5 connected in series with each amplifier output. In Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) transistors (Q15 or Q9<SP>1</SP>) detect the emitter-base voltage of the output transistor (Q14 or Q11<SP>1</SP>) and in Figs. 2 or 3 (not shown), transistors (Q10 or Q12) connected to the collectors of the output emitter followers (Q9 or Q11) detect which emitter follower is conducting. Figs. 2-5 and 8 show operational amplifiers suitable for use in the selecting circuit and which provide an indication if the amplifier is cut off by the common feedback as described above. The amplifiers have erect and inverting inputs B, H (Fig. 2) to Darlington type emitter coupled pairs Q1, Q3 and Q2, Q4 diodes being provided to stabilize the operation. The analogue output is provided in Fig. 2 by transistors Q8 and Q9, the amplifier being suitable for use in a minimum level selector. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the analogue signal output transistor is of the opposite conductivity type and the circuit is suitable for a maximum signal selector. Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) use a different cut-off indicating circuit. Fig. 8 is a similar integrated circuit amplifier but incorporating a cut-off indicator Z8, Z9 including a diode 120 for limiting the swing by limiting the difference in collector potentials.
