Abstract

1315023 Manufacturing pocket-type electrodes VARTA AG 10 Nov 1970 [11 Nov 1969] 53430/70 Heading H1B Tubular pockets, to receive electrodes for use in lead-acid accumulators, are formed in a continuous mat 22 of flexible fabric by automatic machinery. The mat 22 comprises two superposed strips of material with transverse seams to form a series of open-ended pockets. Pairs of adjacent pockets are opened by two spreading device each comprising a pair of opposed arms 9, Fig. 6, which are provided with adhesive surfaces and are brought into contact with opposed sides of the mat near the mouth of a pocket by means of a cam 12 and spring 14. Each adhesive surface is provided by a strip 24, Fig. 8, which passes between wedge blocks 34, 35 and is advanced automatically to provide a fresh surface for each pocket. The sequence of operations is shown in Fig. 8. Two mandrel rods 21 are fed into the opened pockets from opposite sides of the mat by pushers (3, Figs. 1 and 3, not shown) and feed rolls (3, Figs. 1 and 3, not shown) and feed rolls (7, 8). One roll (7) of each pair is threaded over part of its surface to advance a rod 21 laterally as well as axially, thus permitting the advance of the mat 22. The mat is then subjected to, e.g. a thermo-setting process prior to removal of the rods 21.
