1314584 Spray producers E P AGHNIDES 8 July 1970 [8 July 1969] 33206/70 Heading B2F An aerated spray of water comprising a plurality of separate aerated jets is produced by passing a plurality of jets of water through one or more wire mesh screens 10 and 10'. The embodiment shown in section has two rings of orifices 17 and 18 in a diaphragm 12 (only half the section being shown) to which water is supplied under pressure, the form of the upper part of orifices 17 causing the outer ring of jets to diverge outwardly from the inner ring. The screens 10 and 10' aerate the sprays, air being drawn into the chamber above the screens through inlets 14. Another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) has three rings of apertures in the diaphragm and a further screen situated so that the water passes through this screen before reaching the orifices. A further embodiment has two separate paths possible for the water, one consisting of an apertured diaphragm and two screens as in the previous embodiments and the other consisting of two parallel screens arranged in an annulus around the above diaphragm and screens, the path taken by the water being chosen by rotation of an apertured member. A yet further embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) has one small screen per jet from the diaphragm, each in a separate funnel and above an outlet passage for the jet. There is also shown means of obscuring some of the diaphragm orifices in the case of the water pressure not being sufficient to supply sufficient pressure to all orifices. A final embodiment has the orifices in groups of two, each pair eventually producing one aerated jet after passage of the water through three screens. In each embodiment the orifices in the diaphragm may have roofs over them so that the water may enter an orifice laterally, from one side or both. Also each embodiment has means for attaching the aerator to a supply tap, the invention being primarily for use as a domestic shower head.
