1314480 Penicillins PFIZER Inc 13 July 1971 [22 Feb 1971] 32849/71 Heading C2A Novel penicillins having the general Formula I wherein either (i) J is hydrogen and L is a group of formula in which R 4 is hydrogen or lower alkyl and W is lower alkyl, phenyl or substituted phenyl wherein the substituent is lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, chloro, bromo, fluoro or trifluoromethyl; or (ii) J is a group of formula and L is -COOR 3 , in which R is 3-thienyl, phenyl or substituted phenyl wherein the substituent is lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, chloro, bromo, fluoro, trifluoromethyl or di(lower alkyl)amino; R 1 is hydrogen, carbophenoxy, carbo(2-isopropylphenoxy), carbo(5-indanyloxy) carbobenzoxy or -COOR 3 ; and R 3 is hydrogen or acyloxy lower alkyl of formula: wherein R 4 is H or lower alkyl, and W is lower alkyl, phenyl or substituted phenyl wherein the substituent is chloro, bromo, fluoro, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or trifluoromethyl; and cationic salts of said compounds when at least one of R 1 and L is -COOH, the term "lower" indicating groups containing 1-6 carbons, are prepared by acylating 6-aminopenicillanic acid or an ester or amide thereof, with an acid of Formula IV or an N-acylating derivative thereof, or by acylating 6-glycylaminopenicillanic acid with an acid of Formula V or an N-acylating derivative thereof. Pharmaceutical compositions having antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and -negative micro-organisms comprise a penicillin of Formula (I) as defined above or a non-toxic salt thereof, together with a pharmaceutical carrier.
