Abstract
1314181 Making filter elements D A G MARSHALL 19 Feb 1970 [14 Jan 1969] 3091/69 Headings B1D and BIT [Also in Division B5] An air filter is made by forming on one surface of a sheet of porous material a grid or mesh or discrete separated strips of molten thermoplastic material and pressing the sheet whilst the thermoplastic material is still molten against a further air filtering element. The thermoplastic materials act to bond the sheet and element together and, when cooled and solidified forms a reinforcing grid. The sheet may be of air filtering paper, glass fibre paper, synthetic open celled plastics foam, for example foamed polyurethane, random-fibre mat or mono-filament screen. The thermoplastic material may be polyethylene and, if desired, internal reinforcing lengths of string, cord, or wire or nylon may be incorporated in the material to give added strength. In one embodiment, a porous sheet, is passed in front of a first multi-orificed extruder to form lines on its surface in one direction, twisted through an angle, preferably 90, and then passed in front of another multi-orificed extruder to form intersecting lines in another direction. Whilst the grid thus formed is still molten a further filtering element is pressed against it, and the extruded material allowed to cool. If desired a single extruder may be used and the sheet passed twice in front of it. Also relative movement between the sheet and the extruder can be obtained by moving the extruder whilst keeping the sheet fixed or allowing it to move. In one embodiment, a laminated filter element, the components of which are bonded by molten grids 40, 42, includes outer layers of demembraned polyurethene foam 36, 38 and an inner layer 34 of a pleated laminate comprising a sheet of phenolic resin impregnated glass cloth bonded to a filtering layer of, for example, glass fibre paper or demembraned foamed plastics material. The laminated filter element is peripherally bounded by a metal frame 48 of steel or aluminium alloy filled with plastics material 50 to form a complete filter. In a second embodiment, a laminated filter element includes a central carbon-filled honeycomb layer 54 bonded by polyethylene grids 60, 62 to monofilament filtering screens 56, 58. The element is peripherally bounded by a frame 52 of metal or plastics material to form a complete filter.
