Abstract
1314070 Polyester films EASTMAN KODAK CO 8 Oct 1970 [9 Oct 1969 5 Aug 1970] 47915/70 Heading B5B Transparent, unoriented, crystalline polyester films having a heat distortion temperature (as defined by ASTM D1637) of at least 80 C. and an Elmendorf tear strength (as defined by ASTM D1922) of at least 35 grams per mil are prepared by extruding a hot melt of a polyester having as its acid component at least 85 mole percent terephthalic acid or a condensable derivative thereof and as its glycol component at least 85 mole percent 1,4-butanediol or a condensable derivative thereof and quenching the film at a temperature below that at which greater than 1% haze (ASTM D1003) begins to form. The polyester, which preferably has an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0À8, may contain up to 15 mole percent ethylene glycol as its glycol component and 10 mole percent isophthalic acid as its acid component. Examples relate to the production of films having heat distortion temperatures up to 200 C. and Elmendorf tear strengths of up to and greater than 200 grams per mil. by melt extrusion of polytetramethylene terephthalates on to a water-cooled chill roll maintained at a temperature below 77 C.
