Abstract
1313897 Thermosensitive sprinkler head T HATTORI 7 July 1970 33027/70 Heading ASA An automatic sprinkler head comprises body 1, supply passage 2 therethrough for extinguishant to pass to jet outlets 4, valve member 15 closing the passage, and means normally supporting valve 15 in the closure position against the extinguishant pressure and comprising pair of levers 18 hooked over flange 6 on body 1 and, integral therewith, flat halfplates 22 extending downwardly out of passage 2 and fusibly attached to thermoconductive plate 19, so that, on melting of the fusible material, levers 18 fall out of passage 2 allowing valve 15 to move down to open communication between passage 2 and jet holes 4. In Fig. 1, body 1 is formed with lower tapering face 3 having jet holes 4 bored at right angles thereto and connected via chambers 7 and duct 8 to passage 2, and parallel upper face 5 merging into an inner flat portion. Cover 10 integrally formed with externally threaded cylinder 11 can be screwed to 1 with its lower surface fitting tapered face 5 and closing the upper parts of chambers 7 and ducts 8. Cylinder 11 then defines water duct 12 with valvular mouth 13 at its lower end. Valve seat 14 consists of a blade-shaped circular flange integrally formed with cover 10 around mouth 13. Valve 15 includes packing 16 abutting seat 14, and downwardly depending pin 17. The thermosensitive device, Fig. 3, consists of pressure plate 20 with downward tabs 24 and central tube 25, pair of levers 18 with upper arms 21 and lower half-plates 22, and thermoconductive disc 19 with central ridge 23 and a peripheral lip. Levers 18 are assembled on disc 19 abutting ridge 23 and fused thereto by material 26. To assemble the device in head 1, levers 18 are inserted upwards into passage 2 so that arms 21 hook over flange 6 integrally formed in 1, a plate 20 is inserted downwards with tabs 24 and tube 25 around and between arms 21 respectively. Valve 15 with packing 16 is slotted into tube 25 and cover 10 is screwed on to close valve mouth 13. The assembled head is screwed to water pipe 28 (Fig. 5) e.g. in a ceiling mounting. In this position plate 20 and arms 21 are in contact at points a, and arms 21 and flange 6 at points b. On melting of material 26 disc 19 falls away and each lever 18 is pivoted about b into the dotted line position, Fig. 1, by the fluid pressure at a, the levers and plate 20 thus falling from passage 2. Valve 15 drops until its edge abuts flange 6, closing the lower opening of 2 and simultaneously opening mouth 13. Water from pipe 28 then passes through passage 2, ducts 8 and chambers 7 and issues from outlets 4 in a whirling vortex.
