Abstract

1313865 Treating ferrous surfaces with zirconium and boron TOYOTA JIDOSHA KOGYO K K and TOYOTA CHUO KENKYUSHO KK 17 June 1970 [9 July 1969] 29492/70 Heading C7F and C7B Boron or an alloy thereof is formed with a diffusion layer of B and Zr by (1) heating in a powder mixture, (2) heating in a gas (3) immersing in a molten bath of e.g. borax, ZrO 2 , B 4 C and NaCl or (4) electrolytically. The powder in (1) may be B 4 C 1 FeB, borax, boracic acid, Fe-Zr, ZrO 2 and ZrX 4 , where X is a halogen with an additive which may be oxides, carbonates, phosphates or cyanates of alkali and alkaline earth metals or a lumina or silicon carbide. A binder e.g. ethyl silicate may be used. The gas in (2) may be BF 3 , BCl 3 BI 3 BBr 3 , B 2 H 6 , ZrF 4 , ZrCl 4 ZrBr 4 , ZrI 4 , used with a carrier gas of hydrogen, nitrogen, helium or argon. In the electrolytic method carbon steel as the cathode is immersed in a molten bath consisting of 85% borax and 15% zirconium oxide at 900‹C. for 2 hours at a current density of 12 amps lsq. decimeter. The coated steel may be subsequently quenched and then tempered at 550‹C. Similar examples are also described.
