Abstract

1313775 Electro-photographic apparatus MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 23 April 1970 [23 April 1969(2) 12 June 1969(3)] 19613/70 Heading G2H [Also in Divisions H1] An optical image display device comprises a suspension layer including a finely divided electrophoretic substance, suspended in a medium from which it differs in colour, a photo-conductive layer in contact with said suspension layer and electrodes for establishing a potential gradient through the layers. The medium may be a liquid, a liquifiable material, a hardenable liquid or a thermosetting material. A solidifiable medium is used for permanent images. The device may be sensitive to visible, U.V., or I. R. radiation or X or γ -rays whilst one or both of the electrodes may be transparent. In an embodiment, tinoxide-coated glass 8, 4 has a layer 50 of brominated polyvinylcarbazole thereon and is separated from a sheet of tin-oxide coated glass 9, 5 by separator 38 with the intervening space filled with an electro-phoretic suspension of TiO 2 and black particles 6 in olive oil 7. In another embodiment Fig.2, (not shown) a coloured porous layer (12) divides the electro-phoretic suspension in two. One or both of the electrodes may be replaced by a corona discharge Figs.5 and 7 (not shown) or a roller electrode Figs.6 and 8 (not shown) and in this case the suspension medium is covered with a transparent plastics layer (31) or the photo-conductive layer. In the case of a softenable suspension medium, the medium may be contacted directly by the electrode and lie on top of a photo-conductive layer and a transparent plastics layer, (32) Fig.8 (not shown). Two types of electro-phoretic particles may be used in the suspension medium, they may differ in polarity, mobility or colour. Many materials suitable for use as the particles, the photo-conductive layer, the electrode and the transparent plastics layer are exemplified.
