Abstract

1313698 Welding by fusion PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 1 May 1970 [6 May 1969] 21110/70 Heading B3R In electroslag or, as shown, electrogas (CO 2 ) vertical seam butt welding of workpieces, e.g. sheets, 1, 2, wherein welding material is supplied from a vertically movable device on one side of the workpieces, one (not shown) of two vertically movable melt-retaining shoes is disposed on said one side and is secured (e.g. resiliently) to the device, and the other, 23, of said shoes is disposed on the other side of the workpieces and is connected to an arm 10 of the device by a holder, the holder and said arm 10 being adapted to be readily detachable from each other, and said holder including means resiliently urging the shoe 23 against the workpieces and the seam, and being such that the relative block and holder vertical position is maintained when the arm 10 is detached from the holder. The holder comprises a carriage 6 passing through the welding gap 4 and having a hook, such as 7, by which it is entrained by the vertically upwardly moving arm 10. Pairs of workpiece-engaging wheels 12, 13 are mounted on the carriage by way of shafts 14, 15 which are adjustable in carriage slots 16, 17 to accommodate workpieces of varying thicknesses. The show 23 is double-pivoted, via a member 22, to a link 21 which is pivoted to an arm 5 of the carriage 6. A tension-spring 25 connected between the link 21 and the arm 5 presses the wheels 12, 13 and the shoe 23 against the workpieces. When the holder is entrained by the arm 10 the pressure between the wheels 12, 13 and the workpieces is relieved but the pressure of the shoe 23 remains. The shoe 23, of copper, may be cooled via hoses taken through the welding gap 4.
