1313658 Purifying detergent active materials UNILEVER Ltd 23 July 1970 [25 July 1969] 37453/69 Heading C2C A method of reducing the content of inorganic material of an alkane sulphonate containing from 8-22 carbon atoms, prepared by the reaction of bisulphite ions with an olefinic compound, or olefin sulphonate comprises the steps of preparing a monophasic solution of the sulphonate, in a solvent mixture of water and isopropanol and/or tertiary butanol, with conversion of any bisulphite ions present into sulphite ions by the addition of a basic material, heating the solution under reflux at a temperature in the range from boiling to 220‹ C. below boiling, to precipitate a proportion of the inorganic material, separating the precipitated inorganic material from the solution and recovering the detergent active by evaporation of the mixed solvent. Examples of purifying a sodium alkane sulphonate are described with reference to an apparatus flow sheet.
