Abstract

1313639 Moulding piston rings LEEDS PISTON RING & ENG CO Ltd 7 April 1970 [14 Jan 1969] 30561/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division F2] A method of moulding rubber on to a cast iron piston ring 45 comprises the steps of cleaning and roughening the surfaces 47, 48 of the ring, treating the surfaces with an activator, placing the ring into a mould, inserting rubber into the mould in the form of an extruded section of dough so that it bonds to the surfaces, and pressing and curing the rubber, the desired density being controlled by the pressure applied. The lower leg of the L-section shown may be formed as high-density rubber while the other leg is formed of low-density rubber. The rubber may be silicone rubber or v.f.h. rubber (i.e. vinylidene fluoride / hexafluoropropylene rubber).
