Framework. - Metal spars, beams and girders, particularly for use on aircraft, are formed from longitudinal plate and channel members both strengthened by transverse corrugations or flutings, or the plate members strengthened by longitudinal and the channel by transverse corrugations or flutings. The members are riveted together preferably by hollow rivets and may in addition be soldered, sweated, or welded. Transverse diaphragms may be used also. Fig. 3 shows a section of a girder formed of two channel-members A, B having their flanges secured by hollow rivets to two longitudinally corrugated plates D. The members A, B have transverse flutings A<1>, B<1> at intervals, and between the flutings triangular perforations' may be formed to lighten the webs. A modification is described in which the plates D have transverse flutings at intervals, and the structure is provided with rectangular flanged diaphragms secured to the four members by hollow rivets. Or the plates D may have longitudinal corrugations near their junction with the members A, B, the transverse diaphragms being cut away at the corners to clear these corrugations.
