Abstract

1313273 Selective printing POTTER INSTRUMENT CO Inc 16 June 1971 [25 June 1970] 28269/71 Heading B6F Hammer impression.-In a high speed printer, the hammers 13 are fired by first applying a firing pulse to the hammer and hammer and then applying a damping pulse to the hammer as the hammer is rebounding. The damping pulse cancels out the kinetic energy of the hammer and brings it more quickly to rest each time the hammer is fired. The firing circuit comprises a transistor 49 having the hammer coil connected in the collector circuit thereof and a resistance 51 in the emitter circuit thereof. When the hammer is fired the transistor is initially driven into saturation. When the transistor comes out of saturation, negative feedback maintains a constant current through the coil until the transistor is cut off, thus permitting the energy content of both the firing and damping pulses to be controlled by controlling the duration of the firing and damping pulses respectively.
