Abstract

1312989 Pericortical dental implant and inserter A SAMPSON 24 Nov 1970 [22 Jan 1970] 55912/70 Heading A5R A pericortical dental implant comprises a clamp, adapted for application around an exposed portion of the mandible or maxilla, which comprises two halves 11, 12, Fig. 2 each having a substantially planar surface 13, 14, a pedestal 15 extending from the surface 14 adapted to slide between a pair of parallel arms 18, 19 extending from the surface 13, grooves 16 of the pedestal embracing tongues 20 of the arms. The pedestal 15 is provided with one or more posts 25 adapted to receive one or more artificial teeth, a plurality of bone-engaging spikes 21 is provided on each surface 13, 14 and the two halves 11, 12 are held in position about the bone by means of a screw 23. An inserter 30, Fig. 7 for the implant comprises a frusto-conical barrel 31 and two resilient arms (32), (33) Fig. 5 (not shown) extending from one end and adapted to be moved apart by a pair of toggle links (65), (66), Fig. 6 (not shown) attached at 67 to a push rod 63 adapted to be moved parallel to the arms by rotation of a shaft 60 by a thumb-wheel 61. With the arms apart, the two halves 11, 12 of the clamp are inserted between them and the arms closed, portions 19' of the arms 18, 19 engaging in running grooves 35. A hollow shaft 41 longitudinally fixed in the barrel 31 is threadedly engaged at one end portion 45 in an elongate nut 50 having a front flange 51 connected to a flexible cable 54, which cable has a screw end portion 57 threadedly engaged in a pusher plate 52. After insertion of the clamp halves 11, 12 a knurled knob 44 at the other end of the shaft 41 is turned to advance the nut 50 and plate 52 towards the clamp half 11 and the portion 57 of the cable 54 is engaged in a tapped hole 24, Fig. 2, of the half 11 by rotation of a knob 56. The knob 44 is then rotated in the opposite direction and the clamp halves 11, 12 may be firmly held on opposite sides of the bone portion. The screw 23, Fig. 2 and a screw driver 46, 49 are inserted through the shaft 41 and the screw rotated by a rotation of a knob 48 at the other end of the screw driver. The screw driver may then be withdrawn and the threaded engagement of the portion 57 with the clamp released by a rotation of the knob 56, and the plate 52 released from contact with the clamp by a rotation of the knob 44.
