Abstract

1312656 Identification of sample containers LKB-PRODUKTER AB 24 April 1970 [25 April 1969] 19929/70 Heading B1X [Also in Divisions B8 and G1] Samples are identified by information in the form of coded marks, moulded, ground or etched &c in or on to the surface of the sample container, which may be of glass or plastics, for example polystyrene. Two main methods of photoelectrically reading such marks are described. Light may be introduced via the end surfaces of sample walls as in Fig. 1, and in Fig. 3 (not shown) and is internally reflected therealong within the wall only emerging at suitably angled parts of the wall surface i.e. at marks 6. Alternatively, a light source or a light guide provided with a conical cutout at its lower end and illuminated at its top end may be inserted inside a cylindrical container and radially emerging light applied to the internal walls, Fig. 4 and Fig. 6 (not shown). During reading, relative movement between container and the detector means, takes place. The marks may be of various forms. In the case of the Fig. 4 form, in the area of a mark light only emerges from the ends of bulges 17, 18. Another form, Fig. 5, has a lenticular mark which focusses light externally of the outer surface. The marks may be coated with fluorescent material. Containers may be covered with a layer of plastics which is marked. A plurality of detectors may be mounted to read rings of digitally coded arrangements of marks. Infra red radiation may be utilised by providing a black filter in association with the light source. Mechanical or optical zero marks may be provided, at which reading is commenced.
