Abstract

1312585 Rotary shaft seals SONESSON PUMPINDUSTRI AB 4 June 1971 [22 June 1970] 18962/71 Heading F2B To promote heat exchange the gland 7 of a rotary shaft seal is formed with a recess 23 which surrounds the shaft 2 and has an inlet 24 and an outlet 25 for heat transmitting fluid. In the embodiment shown for a pump dealing with hot liquid, packing 6 is compressed in a stuffing- box 4 in the pump housing 3 by the gland 7 and the recess 23 is closed at its outer end by a sealing ring 20. Liquid leaking past the packing 6 enters the recess 23 through the clearance 24 between the shaft and gland and acts to transmit heat from the shaft to the gland which is cooled by a coolant circulated through a channel 9 therein having an inlet 11 and an outlet (12, Fig. 2). A cooling water passage 13 is formed in the pump housing 3. The gland wall 10 around the recess 23 may be corrugated or formed with one or more helical grooves. If the packing is such that substantially no leakage occurs along the shaft, the recess 23 may have a separate inlet connected to an external source of heat transmitting fluid. In some cases the channel 9 may be omitted. If the pumped fluid is so cold as to require heating of the shaft, a heating agent is circulated through the channel 9.
